Al`s Steak Shop in Alexandria

It's always nice to find a sub shop in the dc area that tastes authentic and has all the classic options. Pizza steak was great, huge sub with steak and sauce overfilling the bread. If it doesnt make a mess when you eat it, its not the real deal. I hate seeing other reviews complaining about the sandwich falling apart. They always get the order right and it comes out fast and stays hot. Keep it up!

Had the 12"steak and eggs and it's amazing. Huge sub, some people might even resort to using utensils to eat it. There was a mix up with the online order. Online indicated they open at 10am but in actuality they open at 11am. Still, they were great and got my sub done for me before they opened. Definitely recommend their subs.

I haven't revisited Al's since it reopened, but I will soon. I'm pretty sure I'll rate it 5 stars when I do.I had commented on another comment that struck me as odd but I decided that maybe my comment isn't in the best interest for all. I deleted it.

First time there. One of best steak and cheese

Al's Steakhouse is my #1 Steak and Cheese in the area. I grew up getting the Steak and American Cheese with my family and now have traveled Maryland just to enjoy a classic. Great staff, great quality and a great taste!

First of all, I'm only giving 3 stars based on the fact that this use to be one of the best spots in the city. If not for that, it would be a 1! Now, I have to review their cheeseburger..DONT GET IT! It's basically chopped steak on a bun that is entirely too thick. It is literally THE WORST "burger" I have ever had! Their steak and cheese subs are decent..but never..EVER..get the burger!

If I closed my eyes, my cheese steak transported me to South Philly. (Full disclosure I have never lived in South Philly but have dined on their cheesesteaks). What I really enjoyed was the thinly sliced iceberg lettuce it just worked. The sandwich was a tad to salty but if I was overly worried about my diet I would not have been there. I review many upscale restaurants and this one is basic as you might expect with limited tables. But so good...

Al's has the best steak and cheese sandwiches in Virginia hands down. We have been coming here for 10 years. I drove from Fredericksburg just to get one. You can't go wrong with Al's.

My husband and I a taste for sub, so we decided to go to Al’s. My goodness those subs were absolutely delicious and plentiful. Two thumbs up for sure!

OMG.. I should've taken pictures! Delicious and perfectly cut crinkle cut fries. Wrapped in paper to keep them fresh and crispy. I love that they didn't add salt. I'd rather salt my fries myself. Recommend trying the fries with white truffle ketchup. You'll thank me later 😉The cheese steak was really fantastic. Not too greasy but packed with flavor. I did not like the peppers as they seemed to be pickled, but that's probably me not reading the menu. Easy to pick off the sandwich though. The sandwich was HUGE. It's probably about a 10" sub, but it was stuffed FULL! I had to put half in the fridge for later. I will be ordering from Al's again! And hopefully remember to post pictures..

I have been going to Als for 30 years and always had good service. On my last visit I ordered a steak and cheese special for 11.99. This special included a steak and cheese sub, soggy fries and an 8 ounce soda. Yes I did say 8 once. After looking at what appeared to be a great deal on the chalkboard, I felt duped when I received my order. The fries were horrible and the drink with ice was about 4 ounces of soda. What happened to this place. It used to be such a community treasure.

Bar none, the absolute best cheesesteak I’ve ever had. Been going here for 25 years and nobody comes close. I’ve had hundreds of cheesesteak all across the USA and Als is THE BEST!!!

Steak subs are alright, they've been better. But DON'T ORDER THE PIZZA!!!! They skimp on the toppings that you pay extra for.So it's not enough to pay a total of over $20, you still have to find a way to cut corners? I also left a tip when I see a lot of people that don't and this is the service I get? Won't do that again.Learn how to keep regulars while also building clientele with new customers or you won't survive. Consistency is key. Don't give me normal toppings one time and enough for my cat to eat the next time.You should probably just stick to the basics, don't overdo yourselves.

The pizza is disgusting and had a horrible time there I can stress that how cheap the cheese is and how much grease is on that it’s a cute small building but for two pizzas and two sandwiches and 5 drinks was over 60 dollars. I wish I could give it a 0 outta 10

I Just moved to Maryland from New Jersey. I was driving through Virginia to get my glasses fixed and ran across this place. I smelled a cheesesteak and instantly ran into Al's. I ordered a cheesesteak, but being from NJ we have great cheesesteaks so I was a little skeptical. Man! I tell you, this cheesesteak was slamming. The best I have ever had and the customer service was phenomenal. I will definitely be back, not going anywhere else.

I remember when AL himself put out the best cheesesteaks in Alexandria now after ordering a simple chicken steak no vegetables I got lettuce tomato mayo and a mess of onion and hardly any chicken to speak of and on top of that sub was so soggy from all the mayo and onions the sub looked like it dropped in a bucket of water literally. Onions rings were a grease mound. AL would be extremely upset with what I got he would throw it out and recook it himself. Get it together guys easy on the filler and please read instructions when we send them so we can have the best chance to enjoy your potentially great food.

I had their steak and cheese and it was good but not great. If you are looking for a proper philly style, I dont think this will do it for you.Good: Large portions; quality meat.Not so good: On the pricey side (but see note above about large portions....); soft bun which isnt a good thing in this case because the meat juices and fillings make it fall apart if you dont eat it right away; a little on the bland side, not sure if it needed more cheese or more seasoning or both; I wish the meat was fried a little harder, they were cooking massive amounts of meat on the flat top which looks impressive but it just steams the meat rather than grilling it.

Even if their menu says the burger comes with ketchup and mustard and onions... they don’t add it unless you specifically ask for it. Rude staff and will hang up the phone on you.

Hardly authentic "Philly Cheesesteak" when the default preparation has lettuce, tomato & mayo.More of a steak & cheese hoagie.Meat was super chopped, but had a decent flavor profile.The bread was too soft.Overall the sandwich was too drippy, and made a huge mess.Was actually over-stuffed, contributing to the mess.Prices were far too high for the quality and size of the sandwich.Fountain soda was also small and overpriced.Parking was very difficult and only 4 tables in the restaurant.

I’m from Philly and know my cheesesteaks. Just moved to Alexandria and was looking for my new cheesesteak place. This was literally the worst cheesesteak I have ever had. The roll was awful, not even close to a good Philly cheesesteak roll. My buddy ordered onion and peppers on his cheesesteak and it was just a mess. Way too much and not even cooked with the steak. And not to mention, the price- I ordered two cheesesteaks, 2 orders of fries, (fries were awful as well- ore ida frozen ones) and 2 cokes and the total was $40!!! I could have gone to McDonald’s and had a better meal. Absolute robbery. If you’re in the mood for a cheesesteak find another place to go to- VERY DISAPPOINTING!!! Will never be back.

I came here yesterday with a friend and this is the best chicken cheesesteak I've ever had in my entire life. The bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers are to die for as well. Can't wait to come back to try more food. Definitely would reccomend them. The only bad thing is I wish you would deliver to my area haha just kidding. It's too far.

I haven't eaten here in 25 years.. It was every bit as good as it use to be. It was a trip down memory lane.. Next time I would have him mix the sweet onion (that were delicious) in with the meat instead of on top of the meat.. I will definitely be back sooner this time..

I stopped in for the first time today and their steak & cheese sub was absolutely awesome! I had a craving for a good sub and they surely rose to the occasion! I will be back! I thought it was a little pricey but it was well worth it!

Horrible, food just nit good. To salty and mushy meat. Not what i grew up on.

not what it used to be I guess they got new owners . The steak and cheese used to be ribeye and lots of it ,it was worth every penny but the sub I got today was on par with any other sub shop in the 10-13 dollar range . Much smaller and lower grade steak, Not what you expect from this place at about 25.00. I guess all good things come to an end .

See update below;Not bad, the steak sub didn't stay together, the meat fell through the bottom of the bread. As far as the taste, I liked it. The ice tea was awful, I think it was the water. Also tha he price seemed much too high but I didn't mind it so much because I liked the sub.UPDATE: I returned to give Al's a second chance and let me tell you I was pleasantly surprised. The bread was great which made my sub Awesome. I had fries this time and they were hot and delicious. I opted for a Root Beer to wash it all down and all was well. This was the way a meal was supposed to be. I'll be back for more!

Awesome! My father-in-law was going here years ago and had to take me. He said the cheese steaks are the same great hoagies he remembered. He liked the new expanded menu, but I was there for cheese steaks. Ordered 3, two to take home, and they even packaged up the bread and fixings seperate so I could make them fresh at home so they wouldn't get soggy. That was very appreciated.

Grub hub site is still not fixed. The only sub you can order with an option of 8 or 12 inch is the steak and cheese. All the other steak subs only default to the 8 inch. Please fix this and I'll order.

The best Philly cheese steak this side of Philly. Way better than Pat's and Geno's in Philly, trust me.
